Welltec® has launched a life-of-well, API-qualified completion system for anchoring in cased hole – the Welltec® Expandable Anchor (WEA).  The new solution is a product that has capacity to deliver four different applications, designed to bring greater reliability, flexibility, and efficiency to the well construction process.

“The WEA solution is a machined sleeve which uses a surface-controlled hydraulic expansion process utilized within well construction and completion. The technology has proven reliability for both installation and long-term solution capability,” says Paul Hazel, Welltec’s Global Solutions Director for Well completions.

“Many on-market solutions use a complex series of moving parts for setting and have multiple restrictions on well geometry to deliver reliable anchoring.  This inevitably increases the risk of failure which can result in expensive remedial work or may result in the completion being pulled back to surface to be re-dressed and re-run.  It is exactly this type of risk that we are eliminating with the WEA,” Hazel explains.

4-in-1 completion innovation
Developed on the field-proven platform of Welltec’s metal expandable packer technology, the WEA can be utilized as a liner hanger, tieback liner, inner-string packer, and casedhole plug.

All versions of the product are qualified to the API 19LH V1 standard and are fully compatible with Welltec’s Metal Expandable Packer (MEP) portfolio.

Additional benefits include

  • Option for reciprocation, circulation, and rotation during deployment of the completion string
  • High circulation and low Equivalent Circulating Density (ECD), large running clearance
  • Compatibility with feedthrough lines
  • Elimination of the need for a de-burr run when deployed within perforated liners / casings
  • Bi-directional anchoring with proven MEP sealing to V0

A solution in demand
Onshore and offshore deployments of the new product have already taken place in the Americas and the Middle East respectively, with further deployments scheduled.

“Our Design & Engineering team has developed this solution with a commitment to three focus points: reliability, flexibility, and efficiency.  Rigorous testing over a two-year period has led to the development of a single solution that provides operators with a clear path to securing well integrity in vastly different scenarios,” says Wai Hoe Chum, Welltec’s Vice President of Well Completions.

Welltec® launches new Well Tractor®

Welltec’s all-new Continuous Variable Tractoring (CVT) solution builds on a pioneering conveyance heritage to once again transform well interventions.

Welltec® has launched a fully revised and transformed design of the pioneering Well Tractor® conveyance solution: Well Tractor® 212 CVT, equipped with Continuous Variable Tractoring technology.  The new CVT system automatically maximizes speed and power at all times, optimizing every conveyance run, making operations faster and more efficient than ever before.

Commenting on the launch of the CVT, Welltec VP Sales & Marketing, Alex Nicodimou said: “The Well Tractor remains a key service that we provide, it’s the foundation of everything that we do in conveyance and a solid base for our powered mechanical interventions platform.  It’s what started the entire domain of interventions on wireline.”

“Now our engineers are bringing something special to the market that will ensure we continue to lead in conveyance solutions.”

In addition to the new Continuous Variable Tractoring system, the new Well Tractor offers a whole host of innovative functionality and performance features, including a heavily revised electronics package that is rated to higher temperature demands within a more robust architecture. It also allows for full two-way surface control, that can send commands to the tool downhole and receive diagnostics back at surface.

Traditional conveyance platforms are driven hydraulically by a pump, and in many cases, that downhole hydraulic pump is a shared asset that powers multiple wheel sections downhole. The Well Tractor CVT is configured so that each wheel section has its own power unit.  These new hydraulic units and wheel sections are shorter and more powerful than ever before, resulting in a system that operates as multiple individual tractors downhole with inherent redundancy, without compromising on overall length.  In the event that any one section meets a restriction of any kind, the other sections remain free to power themselves without any detrimental effect.

Well Tractor CVT is the next phase in development of Welltec’s conveyance technology – building on more than 25 years of knowledge and experience, it promises to be just as transformative as the original.

Project Greensand is an ambitious and innovative initiative to develop new ways to capture and store CO2. Welltec has a long history of engineering and delivering solutions that target complex challenges in the energy sector and now looks to help address and meet the 70 percent reduction of CO2 targets by 2030 as set by Danish government.

On August 9th, the UN Climate Panel published its report that paints a bleak forecast for our climate and signals a ‘code red for humanity’.  A summer of floods and fires across Europe, only proving that the climate crisis continues to move closer to our reality. There is an immediate need for measures to effectively reduce CO2 emissions and CO2 capture and storage (CCS) has a critical role to play.

Project Greensand is one such groundbreaking initiative. It consists of a consortium of 29 companies led by INEOS Energy and Wintershall Dea with the goal to develop a full CCS value chain in Denmark.  The ambition is safe CO2 storage in Danish North Sea fields by 2025 and will address 25-40 percent of remnant emissions that must be managed in order to reach Denmark’s ambitious 70 percent reduction target by 2030.

”We are very proud to become a central partner for Project Greensand. Through 25 years of providing well intervention and completion solutions to the energy sector, including high concentration CO2 projects, Welltec has built an extensive knowhow within material selection, testing and solutions,” says Mette Fürstnow, Solutions Director, Green Initiatives, Welltec who will lead the well completions design team.

The testing of the well materials will take place at Welltec’s testing center in Esbjerg, which will boast a newly constructed full-scale CO2 test loop, one of Europe’s largest.

Welltec's CEO Peter Hansen sees great potential in the development of wells that can handle the complicated process of storing captured CO2.

”The world has significant demand for technologies contributing to solving the climate challenges we are currently facing – particularly within the energy sector which plays a vital role in delivering on CO2 emission reduction targets. It is important for Welltec to take an active role to deliver solutions to CCS projects globally. We have uniquely positioned technologies with a strong track record within oil and gas, providing advanced solutions designed to operate under challenging subsurface conditions.  We are already engaged in various CO2 projects and high temperature geothermal applications, we absolutely have a key role to play in CCS too”, says Peter Hansen.
