Sustainable textile technology from ANDRITZ Laroche enables to carry out a breakthrough project based on the circular economy

Renaissance Textile in Laval, France has successfully started up a complete textile recycling line, delivered, installed, and commissioned by ANDRITZ Laroche, part of the international technology group ANDRITZ.

The state-of-the-art ANDRITZ textile recycling equipment enabled Renaissance Textile to become the first French recycling platform dedicated to industrial end-of-life textiles. The project aims to produce new fibers from the collected post-consumer apparel, which will be used to weave new recycled fabrics in the end.

The new 12,000 m² plant is equipped with a complete tearing line whose unique design is the result of close collaboration between R&D specialists from ANDRITZ Laroche and Renaissance Textile, as well as customized trials carried out jointly by the two parties at the ANDRITZ technical center in Cours, France.

The new clothing produced based on this type of circular economy model thus reflects the social and sustainability commitments of Renaissance Textile in terms of decarbonizing the textile industry, the fight against global warming, autonomy in raw material sourcing, and promotion of local staffing, particularly for people who have been unemployed for a long time or are seeking to enter the labor market for the first time. It is the first milestone of a pioneering project that ANDRITZ is proud to actively support. By 2025, for example, Renaissance Textile plans to create no less than 110 direct jobs.

Nicolas Nojac, director of Renaissance Textile, comments: “Our first recycling line is dedicated to white polycotton textiles that mainly come from the healthcare and food processing industries. This equipment enables us to recycle 3,000 tons of textiles every year, representing 10 million items of clothing. We also plan to install two additional lines by the end of 2023 and 2025, respectively, to enlarge the range of recycled textiles by adding different colors and fibers”.

ANDRITZ Oy, part of international technology group ANDRITZ, and LUT University (Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology LUT) launched an extensive collaboration in the field of fiber technology a year ago. As a result, a new state-of-the-art research laboratory for the joint development of sustainable fiber technologies will open at the LUT campus in Lahti on November 3, 2022. The unique corporate collaboration model is a substantial step towards a new way of sharing infrastructures and intensifying research work with external partners.

The new research laboratory and LUT's academic expertise bring added value to ANDRITZ’s own research and innovation. Collaboration with LUT strongly supports ANDRITZ’s development of highly efficient, sustainable products and technologies. In addition, ANDRITZ aims to strengthen its position as a pioneer in innovative technologies whilst supporting its position as one of the most attractive employers in the Finish fiber industry.

Kari Tuominen, President and CEO of ANDRITZ Oy, says: “Locating the research laboratory in Lahti will enable close collaboration between ANDRITZ and LUT researchers. Our cooperation has always been fruitful and effortless for both parties. We’re glad that LUT managed to build the laboratory nearly on schedule despite the logistical challenges related to the global situation.”

“The brand-new laboratory enables us to study, test and analyse on biomass-based fibres and fibre products even better than before. The new facilities will meet the needs of LUT research groups, ANDRITZ and regional industry,” adds Mari Kallioinen-Mänttäri, LUT University Dean.

The aim is to strengthen the bioeconomy cluster in the Lahti area and support the start-up and growth of new businesses. Biorefinery research currently employs four professors and ten researchers on the Lahti campus. LUT aims to increase the overall number to 40 in the near future.

Mari Kallioinen-Mänttäri points out that such a large-scale investment would not have been possible without considerable financial support by the university’s partners.

“Collaboration with ANDRITZ constitutes one of the largest business commissions in LUT’s history. In addition to current joint research, we are exploring possibilities to expand our collaboration beyond fiber research. For students, it will mean more thesis and job opportunities,” says Mari Kallioinen-Mänttäri.

ANDRITZ has successfully received the Final Acceptance Certificate for a biomass handling plant at Eldorado’s Onça Pintada site in Três Lagoas, Mato Grosso do Sul. This plant is part of the first thermoelectric power plant in Brazil to consume eucalyptus stumps and roots.

The plant will be able to generate 50 megawatts of electricity from an innovative source – eucalyptus stumps and roots, the parts of the trees not used in the pulp manufacturing process. This expands the capacity to generate energy from waste material originating from reforestation crops that are maintained by the company itself in the states of Mato Grosso do Sul and São Paulo.

The daily processing capacity is 1,500 tons of material that formerly went to waste in the forest – enough to generate the electricity needed to light up a city of 700,000 inhabitants in a fully sustainable way, and this power will also be fed to the Brazilian national grid.

ANDRITZ has played a key role in the project – from the EPC model to design and supply of the unique solutions and technologies required to implement a generating system for renewable energy. Among the innovations are the truck dumpers designed to receive the chips for feeding the boiler. These chips are delivered by large-capacity vehicles.

The receiving system consists of two truck dumpers coupled to respective hoppers. There is a belt conveyor to receive the material from these hoppers and transport it to the pile. A stacker-reclaimer with a capacity of up to 40,000 m³ has the functions to form the pile and feed a second belt conveyor, which is responsible for transporting the material to the power boiler.

The project is a pioneering one and the first to use residues left over from pulp production. It promotes sustainable power generation initiatives, drastically reducing the impact on the environment and encouraging energy generation and pulp production that respects the boundaries of natural resources renewal.

Grandblue Bioenvironment Co., Ltd. has successfully started up two ANDRITZ ADuro QZ1600-BIO shredders at its mills in Jinjiang City, Fujian Province, and Xiaogan City, Hubei Province, China.

The two new ADuro QZ1600-BIO shredders process kitchen waste at a design capacity of 15 t/h each and pulp the organic fraction effectively by means of rotating chains. Non-organic material like plastics remains largely intact enabling optimum separation in subsequent process steps. The machines do not use any cutting tools, but gently and quickly break up the input material per impact forces. Compared to conventional cutting systems, the ADuro QZ offers significant advantages in terms of performance and wear.

Yang Rongmei, Technology Manager, Grandblue Bioenvironment Technology says: “In 2016, we collaborated with ANDRITZ for the first time, as part of a pilot project for kitchen waste treatment. This was later followed by another successful project for our Zhangzhou mill. ANDRITZ equipment has shown excellent performance. Especially the gas formation is more efficient due to shorter fermentation times, resulting in an overall higher gas yield in the fermenter.”

Grandblue Bioenvironment will soon start up two more ADuro QZ1600-BIO shredders and equipment for compacting delivered by ANDRITZ for additional kitchen waste treatment plants in Hebei and Hubei provinces, China.

Grandblue Bioenvironment Technology Co., Ltd. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Grandblue Environment Co., Ltd., a listed company focusing on environmental industry. Grandblue Environment focuses on several business fields, including solid waste treatment, energy, and water supply, as well as drainage. The company operates 12 treatment plants for kitchen waste and animal manure with a total capacity of about 3,000 t/d.
