Seat valves with extended pressure and temperature. Bürkert now offers particularly durable and low-maintenance on/off and control valves for switching and controlling gases, liquids and steam in the process and food industries that are suitable for media pressures up to 25 bar and temperatures up to 230 °C.

Low-maintenance on/off and control valves are essential in the food and process industry. They control the flow of gases, steam or liquids, for example in auxiliary processes such as CIP (cleaning-in-place), reverse osmosis or temperature control. Bürkert now offers a wide range of electric motor and pneumatically operated on/off and control valves specially suited for these applications, with extended pressure and temperature ranges. Thanks to special sealing materials, the valves with stainless steel valve bodies work without any problems with media up to 25 bar gauge pressure and temperatures between -40 °C and 230 °C (Image). The rated service life at 200 °C is more than one million switching cycles. Devices and seals therefore only very rarely need to be replaced, which in turn increases system availability. Sealing materials and lubricants suitable for foodstuffs, drinking water, fuel gases or oxygen allow the valves to be used with other media, for example for cleaning and flushing purposes, for heat carriers or saturated steam at 20 bar and 215 °C. So they can be used to switch and control all common gases and liquids for heating and cooling purposes in the specific process as well as in traditional CIP processes. It is also possible to use them with heat transfer oils e.g. in conjunction with alternative heating concepts.

Extensive assortment of process valves
The high-pressure and high-temperature valves are available in different versions with straight-seat on/off and control valves as well as with angle seat on/off and control variants. Depending on the version, the stainless steel bodies offer flange, weld, thread or clamp connections in DNs from DN10 to 100 or NPS 3/8” to 4”. Design details take into account the special requirements of the areas of application. Swivel plates, for example, increase seat tightness while optimised wipers extend the service life of the self-adjusting packing. Different plug and seat sets in metallic or soft-sealing variants allow an exact adaptation to the respective operating medium. The on/off valves with media flow below the valve seat for water and other liquid media prevent pressure surges (water hammer). This reduces maintenance and replacement costs, especially when no service personnel are on site.

Controlling the Bake of the Perfect Loaf

Bread. Just thinking of the word pushes your olfactory senses to imagine yeast-based delights at the counter of your favorite bakery. But baking the perfect loaf, and in large enough quantities, demands furnaces that accurately control the process from beginning to end. This was precisely the task faced by Mechatronics Ltd., a system integrator and official distributor of Delta Motion, Drive, Control, and Robotics products based in Bulgaria.

The requirements for the bread furnace machine defined four temperature zones. The first zone is especially powerful to compensate for the cooled conveyor belt and the relatively cool loaf entering the oven. At this step, steam is also injected into the furnace to give it that freshly-baked sheen. It is followed by three temperature-controllable baking zones that are carefully controlled for baking the optimal loaf. The conveyor belt of this traveling oven design must also be held at the correct speed throughout the process. Rounding off the specifications was a human-machine interface (HMI) to configure the baking process, deliver temperature status of each zone, and output any error status information.

For the HMI, the team selected the Advanced HMI DOP-107WV from the DOP-100 Series. This touch-based control panel features a 16:9 7” color TFT screen with a modern-looking, narrow frame. Its multilingual support meant it was well-suited for the target market, while user-friendly editing software ensured that the final user interface was easy to navigate. With several RS-485 capable COM ports, it integrated perfectly with the other components selected for the furnace. Considering the operating environment, the flat, wipeable surface of the DOP-107WV proved the ideal choice for a dusty bakery. Control for the conveyor was implemented using an MS300 Series inverter. This AC motor variable frequency drive (VFD) also supported the RS-485 Modbus interface and is ideal for open-loop control of IM and PM motors.

Of course, the quality of the bake is ultimately defined by the furnace. Special attention was given to selecting the optimal control approach for the seven heating elements used. After careful deliberation, the DTC1000 Temperature Controller was selected as the main controller, with DTC2000 controllers used in parallel for the remaining six heaters. These are also connected to the Modbus. The selection of established, reliable components, along with the careful programming, were critical in delivering a low-maintenance design that could be operated 24/7.

To provide optimal temperature regulation, the auto-tuning function of the DTC1000/2000 was used. The inputs are acquired from third-party PT100 temperature sensors while control of the heating elements is implemented with solid-state relays. Auto-tuning uses a training process to configure the closed-loop PID controller once the sensors and heaters are installed in this 250 kW furnace. Further complicating the implementation is the dual heating and sensing of the last three baking zones. With one heater above the conveyor and the other below, each needs to be set to a different temperature. Spare outputs from the Delta Temperature Controllers were available and linked to relays for audible and visible alarm signals. These signals were also replicated in the DOP-107WV HMI.

Closely coupled with the quality of the bake is the speed control of the conveyor belt. The MS300 VFD is linked to an inductive proximity sensor that is easy to clean and remains accurate in the dusty baking environment. Installed closed to the gears, the built-in programmable logic controller (PLC) of the MS300 is configured to monitor and calculate the conveyor speed. This is continuously compared it to the setpoint defined in the HMI. Thus, the end-customer only needs to set the desired baking time, the required temperature, and then press run to start baking.

The Mechatronics Ltd. team benefited from the broad range of industrial automation solutions in the Delta portfolio. Integration of the VFD, HMI, and Temperature Controller was simplified thanks to the out-of-the-box interoperability and connectivity of the components selected.

“Most people would assume that baking bread is very simple. On the contrary, the bread furnace project has highlighted the skill required of both bakers and engineers to create a machine that delivers the perfect loaf. The auto-tuning function of the DTC1000/2000 played a large part in ensuring that bakers can deliver a quality product every batch, by providing excellent temperature control,” said Victor Ogedegbe, Field Application Engineer at Delta.

“Construction of the bread furnace was simplified by the availability of components that are interoperable and fulfilled the requirements demanded by our customers. Accurate temperature control was most critical for us, and the Delta team's support was essential in configuring the DTC1000/2000 auto-tuning function. This assistance contributed to the project moving from the initial design stage to full production in just seven months,” said Toma Draganov, Automation engineer at Mechatronics Ltd.

With a new development in the hexagonal chuck series from Hainbuch, the clamping device manufacturer from Germany, enters the next round. In 2006, the first Toplus chuck with hexagonal clamping geometry began its career. Just one year later, the Toplus IQ with integrated measuring technology followed, and in 2012, the mini version with a smaller interference contour and lower weight was born. Now Hainbuch presents its latest development: The highest precision Toplus premium chuck is available from stock and points with many additional advantages.

The ≤ 5 μm accurate Toplus premium chuck with premium clamping head. The ≤ 5 μm accurate Toplus premium chuck with premium clamping head.

High precision without alignment
Hainbuch's chucks have always been very precise. Once the chucks are aligned, the runout is close to zero for repeat clamping. If the various chuck heads are then changed, the runout is usually between 3 to 7 μm without alignment. With the new Toplus premium chuck, Hainbuch always guarantees a runout of ≤ 5 μm without alignment – regardless of which clamping head is used. Until now, this was only possible with a high-priced hydraulic expansion or diaphragm chuck with the drawbacks entailed by their design. In many cases, a runout of ≤ 10 μm is perfectly sufficient. However, components or machining processes with a runout of ≤ 5 μm are increasingly becoming the standard. Using a Toplus premium chuck with the associated premium clamping heads and by clamping against the workpiece stop, this level of accuracy is always achieved. This means that manufacturers don´t lose time making alignments for small batch sizes and they can be highly flexible, because it is just as accurate as a chuck aligned for series production.

With the new Toplus premium chuck, Hainbuch always guarantees a runout of ≤ 5 μm without alignment. With the new Toplus premium chuck, Hainbuch always guarantees a runout of ≤ 5 μm without alignment.

Easier automatic loading
To save time and costs, a robot is often used to load the workpieces in the machine. This can become a problem if the clamping stroke is too small. With the Toplus premium chuck combined with a clamping head, the stroke is large enough, and makes loading easier, even if the robot works somewhat imprecisely. In addition, it is very robust and not as sensitive as some other clamping devices. A slight contact with the workpiece during loading has no effect on the chuck. The process remains stable. It is also sealed against contamination and vibration. With the Toplus premium, both thin-walled and solid parts are clamped securely with no centrifugal losses. And last but not least: the Toplus premium – like all chucks – is available in the Hainbuch system. This means that changing from external to internal or jaw clamping takes no more than two minutes.
