Grand Opening of Peljesac Bridge in Croatia

MCI® Technology Applied on One of the World’s Most Demanding Construction Projects!

On 26 of July, Pelješac Bridge, the largest ever EU infrastructure investment in Croatia, officially opened in grand ceremony. The bridge, providing a road link between two parts of the country is of strategic importance and is one of the most substantial EU infrastructural investments ever. It connects the region of Southern Dalmatia with the rest of the country's mainland. The bridge will cut travel time by 37 minutes along the Adriatic coastline, improving people’s lives and increasing economic opportunities for the region. It has 13 spans, five of which are 285 meters long, six centrally placed reinforced concrete pylons with a height of 33 meters, and two lanes together with a stop lane that will serve for bridge maintenance.

Peljesac bridge is ranking among the most demanding bridges in the world—in complexity of construction and design. Bridge is 2,404-m (7,887.14-ft) long.

ln order to meet the main criteria of quality design, such as stability, durability, economy and integration into the environment, the design proposed the construction of an extra dosed bridge with an integrated hybrid structure. Structure is comprised of five central spans, each 285-m long, and six low pylons. Especially careful approach was taken to ensure durability for the extended lifespan of over 130 years. Cortec’s MCI® 2018 was specified on this project during the design phase as a silane-based impregnation with a migrating inhibitor property to protect against the harmful effects of corrosion, thus extending the service life of the bridge. MCI® 2018 is a 100% silane-based concrete sealer, containing migrating corrosion inhibitors that allow deep penetration into concrete and provides water repellence by chemically reacting with the cementitious substrate. It seals surface pores, preventing the intrusion of chlorides, reduces carbonation, and protects from the ingress of wind-driven rain. Treated concrete surfaces are fully breathable and their natural moisture-vapor transmission is not affected. After repair of surface damage and cleaning of discolorations and other surface defects, the concrete surface of the pylons needed to be protected with a colorless silane coating to improve durability and increase the resistance of the concrete surface to long-term external influences. MCI®-2018 carries CE certification that indicates conformity with health, safety and environmental protection standards for products sold within the European Economic Area (EEA).

Application of Cortec’s MCI®-2018

A combination of AC coatings, cathodic protection of steel reinforcement in piles and pile heads, a concrete cover of 65–85 mm stainless steel reinforcement and impregnation of all concrete surfaces with MCI®-2018 was selected. This was chosen as the strategy to help the bridge achieve a 130-year service life. MCI®-2018 was applied on the entire substructure of the bridge. All concrete parts were coated with MCI®-2018 by a spraying technique. The work was performed in accordance with the project requirements and after surface preparation to full functionality.

This included:

  • Access to pylons
  • Rehabilitation of the concrete surface of the pylons
  • Cleaning the concrete surface of the pylon (washing the pillars with water)
  • Impregnation of the concrete surface of the pylon with MCI®-2018.

MCI®-2018 contains time-proven Migrating Corrosion Inhibitors (MCI®). The silane component provides water repellency by chemically reacting with the cementitious substrate under proper application, decreasing the ingress of aggressive materials. The product penetrates deep into concrete, providing corrosion protection to reinforcing steel from existing water and chloride ions, or other contaminants. Continuous monitoring of the condition of the structure at one central place was done during the construction phase and will be done at the exploitation phase to examine parameters of structural behavior, time, seismic activity, and structural durability. The designer of the bridge specified corrosion protection for all concrete segments in order to achieve a 130-year service life.

Cortec’s CEO, Boris Miksic, Croatian-American businessman is proud that his patented technology was used on this historic project to connect two parts of his country. “Our MCI® technology is used in largest construction projects throughout the globe. Witnessing its application in my home country on this monumental bridge structure is truly a special. Peljesac bridge is huge step forward for all of us.”  A strategic investment such as this bridge, demonstrates European Commission’s commitment to bring people together and unite territories, while reinforcing the territorial cohesion of the region and helping other neighboring countries.

One challenge that metal manufacturers and finishers face is corrosion protection during shipping and storage. Many strategies exist, from coatings and liquid rust preventatives to VCI packaging. The latter has revolutionized the way metals are protected in an enclosed package, replacing greasy rust preventatives with dry corrosion protection. Yet manufacturers with sharp or pointed metal parts have the additional risk of puncture, which could ruin the integrity of the entire package. Cortec® addresses this problem with CorShield® VpCI®-146 Reinforced Paper for heavy-duty puncture prone packaging applications.

2022 03 16 092143Vapor phase Corrosion Inhibitor Protection – How It Works
All Cortec® VpCI® brand papers are coated in-house with Cortec’s proprietary VpCI® formula. Vapor phase Corrosion Inhibitors in the coating vaporize and form a protective corrosion inhibiting molecular barrier on metal surfaces wrapped inside the paper. When the component is unpacked, the invisible protective layer does not require cleaning and the part can be used immediately.

VCI Paper - Reinforced
While standard Cortec® CorShield® VpCI®-146 Paper is enough to satisfy the corrosion protection needs of many metals being stored in one place or shipped to another, some circumstances require a tougher grade of packaging. CorShield® VpCI®-146 Reinforced Paper provides two extra benefits for these heavy-duty applications:

(1) CorShield® VpCI®-146 Reinforced Paper offers excellent tear resistance. This is important when packaging oddly shaped metals or those with pointed or sharp edges where puncture could be a concern when handling non-reinforced papers.

(2) CorShield® VpCI®-146 Reinforced Paper also includes a moisture barrier. This not only adds to the durability of the paper but also protects against the ingress of water vapor for moisture sensitive items. This quality is helpful for protecting packages that undergo harsh, high humidity environments. It is also beneficial for packaging parts still covered with grease or process oils that that might leach through or break down standard paper.

How and Where to Use CorShield® VpCI®-146 Reinforced Paper
The traits mentioned above—corrosion protection, tear resistance, and moisture resistance—make CorShield® VpCI®-146 Reinforced Paper easily adaptable to a variety of packaging needs. The standard application method is to wrap a metal item in the paper, fold edges together, and tape the paper folds in place. In addition to single item packaging, CorShield® VpCI®-146 Reinforced Paper can be used for interleaving between layers of metal components, closing the end of shipping tubes, inserting into recessed areas of large packages, and lining crates and boxes where moisture might leach through. Possible items to protect include

Coils, wire reels, plate, bar, etc.
Raw and machined forgings and castings
Sheet metal work, stampings, springs, bearings, fasteners, tubing, pipes, nails, etc.
Finished goods: engines, machinery, tools, hardware, appliances, instruments, motors, etc.
Electrical and electronic components, controls, etc.

Whether you find yourself wrapping pipes and rods or metal coils, CorShield® VpCI®-146 Reinforced Paper is a great option for durable corrosion inhibiting moisture barrier packaging protection that resists tearing. Cortec® is pleased to announce the release of EcoAir® Biobased Outdoor Coating powered by Nano VpCI®. Since its inception, Cortec® Corporation has been looking for ways to make corrosion prevention more environmentally responsible. Sometimes this takes place in giant steps. Other times it is done by baby steps, such as replacing a petroleum-based chemical with a biobased ingredient to improve sustainability. With the release of EcoAir® Biobased Outdoor Coating powered by Nano VpCI®, Cortec® has addressed two aspects of environmental responsibility while expanding its options for user convenience.

Biobased Temporary Protective Coating

EcoAir® Biobased Outdoor Coating powered by Nano VpCI® is a ready-to-use temporary coating designed for severe marine and high humidity conditions. It comes in a convenient EcoAir® spray can, and it is classified as non-flammable. It provides multi-metal corrosion protection that is temperature stable to 180 °F (82 °C). It leaves behind an oily protective film that does not dry and offers outstanding rust prevention in outdoor applications.* When the protection period is over, EcoAir® Biobased Outdoor Coating can be removed by rinsing with a Cortec® VpCI®-41x series cleaner degreaser.

In addition to its key corrosion inhibiting quality, the most significant fact about EcoAir® Biobased Outdoor Coating  by Nano VpCI® is its classification as a USDA Certified Biobased Product that contains 65% USDA biobased content. This high level has been achieved by combining renewably sourced oil and solvent materials with Cortec’s proprietary VpCI® corrosion inhibitor formulation for effective protection.

EcoAir® Spray Can Benefits

While Cortec® has offered biobased coating technology similar to EcoAir® Biobased Outdoor Coating in the past, now is the first time Cortec® has packaged it in an EcoAir® bag-on-valve spray can. This makes the coating easy to carry around and spray where needed, even in remote locations that do not have readily available electricity to run power spray equipment. EcoAir® cans can be sprayed in any direction, even upside down, making it easy to apply the coating in hard-to-reach areas.

EcoAir® cans also have environmental, health, and safety benefits. Instead of using traditional chemical propellants such as CO2 or flammable propane/isobutane, EcoAir® Biobased Outdoor Coating is powered by compressed air and is classified as non-flammable. An EcoPouch® inserted into the pressurized can contains the liquid, which is expelled by the surrounding pressure as the valve is depressed. When the can is empty, the metal can be recycled after the pouch is removed.

2022 02 25 122552Where to Use

EcoAir® Biobased Outdoor Coating powered by Nano VpCI® is a convenient, more sustainable option for temporary protection of metal parts almost any place a wet film corrosion inhibitor is desired. For example, tube manufacturers who need to temporarily store piping on sheltered outdoor racking can protect unpainted ends with a quick spray of EcoAir® Biobased Outdoor Coating. Offshore layup crews in the habit of protecting bare metal moving equipment parts with a petroleum-based wet film corrosion inhibitor can substitute EcoAir® Biobased Outdoor Coating while still getting a high level of protection in a marine environment. EcoAir® Biobased Outdoor Coating is also a great option for manufacturers who want to spray a light oily biobased protective coating on metal components before shipping or storage (e.g., automotive service parts)

Take Advantage of Biobased Options

For anyone who wants a biobased rust preventative temporary coating in convenient spray can format, EcoAir® Biobased Outdoor Coating powered by Nano VpCI® is an exciting addition to the market. EcoAir® Biobased Outdoor Coating helps users achieve wet film corrosion protection with a biobased, air-powered spray can alternative to petroleum-based corrosion inhibitors packaged in traditional aerosols.

Cortec® Corporation is pleased to announce that its S-8 corrosion inhibitor additive for food-can processing has been awarded the USDA Certified Biobased Product label! S-8 is now able to display a unique USDA label that highlights its percentage of biobased content and signifies its qualification to meet mandatory federal purchasing requirements under the USDA BioPreferred® Program.*

2022 02 03 102920

“We applaud Cortec® Corporation for earning the USDA Certified Biobased Product label,” said Vernell Thompson, USDA BioPreferred® Program. “Products from Cortec® Corporation are contributing to an ever-expanding marketplace that adds value to renewable agriculture commodities, creates jobs in rural communities, and decreases our reliance on petroleum.”

Cortec® is proud of this “green” chemistry achievement and addition to its growing line of USDA certified biobased products, which represent a long-standing commitment to environmental responsibility.

S-8 contains 71% USDA certified biobased content and is formulated with FDA compliant ingredients. It is designed for corrosion protection of sealed food cans during washing and sterilization. While most of a can’s life may be spent sitting on a shelf in a dry environment, newly packed and sealed cans pass through hot steam for sterilization, sometimes followed by a cold-water bath, before ever reaching the warehouse, store, or pantry shelf. Exposure of the metal can to steam, water, and air at this stage of processing is a perfect recipe for corrosion, which could lead to serious repercussions for the producer, seller, and consumer if not properly addressed. S-8 can be added at a very low dose to the sterilization and cooling water to safeguard against the risk of flash corrosion from rinsing and sterilization.

Three phases of inhibitor action—in the water, in the air, and at the air-water interface—give S-8 unique protective abilities for the steam sterilization environment, inhibiting corrosion even when the cans are not fully submerged in S-8 treated water. The additive leaves behind a persistent thin protective layer that will not cause sticky deposits on the surface of the can. Benchtop laboratory tests show outstanding film persistency and stability in a wide temperature range. This “green” filming corrosion inhibitor contains salts of fatty amino acids and amino alcohols as the active ingredients and does not hydrolyze during application.

2022 02 03 102938

A large food can producer in Croatia started using S-8 in 2012 in conjunction with S-14 for corrosion protection and scale control in process water used to wash and sterilize cans. The water treatment additives solved the scale and corrosion problems, and, as of five years later, it was reported that these two products were still being used with satisfaction.

Cortec® is proud to contribute to the marketplace with a “green” chemistry product that is both useful and sustainable. First, the product meets an important need to protect food cans from flash rust at the end of the canning process. Second, the product uses FDA compliant materials to make it suitable for use on packed and sealed food cans. Third, the product relies on renewable, biobased raw materials to reduce the consumption of non-renewable resources. Furthermore, S-8 can be used by US federal agencies and their contractors who need to meet minimum biobased content levels when purchasing corrosion inhibitors.

Cortec® Presents EcoShield® VpCI®-144 Super Barrier: A Fully Recyclable Moisture Barrier Alternative to Polycoated and Waxed Papers!

Cortec® Corporation has developed a new Super Barrier version of its EcoShield® VpCI®-144 paper for protecting metal parts from corrosion! EcoShield® VpCI®-144 Super Barrier combines the corrosion protection of VpCI® paper coating with a high gloss water-based barrier coating that prevents moisture from reaching metal parts wrapped inside the paper. The enhanced moisture barrier of EcoShield® VpCI®-144 Super Barrier is an excellent environmentally friendly alternative to polyethylene and waxed papers.

2016 09 09 094359

Under recent ASTM E-96 testing, EcoShield® VpCI®-144 Super Barrier exhibited a water vapor transfer rate (WVTR) highly comparable to that of polycoated paper.

Past testing has also shown EcoShield® VpCI®-144 Super Barrier to rival the moisture barrier properties of polycoated paper and commercial waxed paper. This is an important advantage since poly and wax coatings are not recyclable through normal channels and therefore create an environmental problem. In contrast, EcoShield® VpCI®-144 Super Barrier paper is environmentally safe and fully recyclable/repulpable into other types of paper products such as boxes, cardboard, and other corrugated materials.

EcoShield® VpCI®-144 Super Barrier, the premium moisture barrier corrosion inhibiting paper in the industry, combines corrosion protection, moisture barrier properties, and oil and grease resistivity into one material to protect both ferrous and non-ferrous metals. This eliminates the need to inventory multiple types of papers for different types of metal. Protected metals include:

  • Carbon Steel
  • Stainless Steel
  • Galvanized Steel
  • Cast Iron
  • Aluminum Alloys
  • Copper
  • Brass (≤30% Zn)
  • Solder

VpCIs on the inside face of the EcoShield® VpCI®-144 Super Barrier paper vaporize and condense on metal surfaces to form a thin protective film that doesn’t influence physical properties of most sensitive electrical and electronic components, including conductivity and resistivity. The protective film does not need to be removed prior to further surface finishing or coating application, and protected parts can be painted, welded, or soldered.

EcoShield® VpCI®-144 Super Barrier is useful in a variety of different applications:

  • Metal production: coils, wire reels, plate, bar, etc.
  • Metal forging and die casting: raw and machined forgings and castings
  • Metalworking: stamping, sheet metal work, springs, bearings, fasteners, tubes, pipes, jewelry, silverware, etc.
  • Finished products: engines, machinery, equipment, tools, hardware, appliances, instruments, motors, etc.
  • Electrical and electronic products: components, controls, printed circuit boards, etc.

EcoShield® VpCI®-144 Super Barrier eliminates the package contamination found with other competing VCI/VPI papers because it is made from the highest quality neutral natural kraft paper without the use of chlorine or other bleaching chemicals. It contains no nitrites, phosphates, silicones, chromates, other heavy metals, or toxic products.

EcoShield® VpCI®-144 Super Barrier conforms to ASTM E-96, NACE TM0208-2008 (Vapor Inhibiting Ability), NACE RPO487-2000 (Selection of Rust Preventives), TAPPI T-410 (Basis Weight), TAPPI T-411 (Caliper Thickness, Tear Strength), TAPPI T-414 (Tear), TAPPI T-494 (Dry Tensile/TEA), TAPPI T-404 (Stretch), TAPPI T-530 (Ink Float), TAPPI T-538 (Smooth), TAPPI T-541 (Internal Bond), TAPPI T-476 (Abrasion), and is commercially equivalent to military specification MIL-P-3420E. It is fully repulpable according to the Fibre Box Association Voluntary Standard.
