C&I Technology News – July/Aug Update

Emerson has acquired Groveley Detection Ltd, a Christchurch, UK-based developer of ultrasonic gas leak detection devices for offshore and onshore oil and gas installations. The Dorset company, which claims to be the first company to develop a piezo-electric based ultrasonic gas leak detector engineered for extreme industrial applications, will join Emerson’s Rosemount Analytical unit.

Invensys Operations Management has added, what it believes is, the world’s first TÜV-certified alarm and bypass management tool. The recently introduced Triconex Safety View is certified by TÜV Rheinland to IEC61508 Systematic Capability 3 for use in applications up to SIL3.  (Company release)

GE claims to have introduced the first big data and analytics platform robust enough to manage the data produced by large-scale, industrial machines in the cloud. Built to support the Industrial Internet and turn big data into real-time insight, the platform will benefit major global industries including energy production and manufacturing. This, it said, marks the first time industrial companies will have a common architecture, combining intelligent machines, sensors and advanced analytics.

Yokogawa
has recently released CENTUM VP R5.03 – an enhanced version of the integrated production control system. The enhancements include: A router that enables a CENTUM VP system to remotely monitor and control equipment over wide area networks; batch functions for greater flexibility when changing production procedures; and ability to integrate data from intelligent electric devices (IEDs). The control room of the future was a major theme at the 2013 Honeywell Users Group (HUG) Americas Symposium in Phoenix.Arizona, Here the introductions included a dashboard to help better manage control-system cyber security, advanced virtualisation technology and a new version of Honeywell’s OneWireless Network.

Another feature was a futuristic console for Honeywell's Experion Process Knowledge System (PKS) Orion platform that reduces operator fatigue with an improved, ergonomic design featuring a larger display and new alarm lighting and provide better mobility for operators while improving situational awareness.

Emerson has introduced a new biomass fuel moisture sensor for its Ovation expert control system. This is said to enable biomass-fuelled power plants to continually monitor feedstock moisture content and adjust the combustion process to help reduce maintenance costs an raise net yearly MWh production.

Honeywell has come up with three new software offerings: Intuition Operations Monitoring software, built on Honeywell’s Intuition platform, is used to help operators keep the process within the best operating zone; Control Performance Monitoring software helps engineers to monitor, identify, diagnose and remedy process control asset issues across all plant layers; and Alarm Management software helps operators better manage their processes without compromising safe operations.

Emerson has added new diagnostic capabilities to its FieldQ rack & pinion, fully integrated valve actuator and controls. These enable users to categorise and prioritise device alarms based on the criticality of the device and the severity of the problem detected by the diagnostics.
