PetroHab Launched the Innovative ATEX Certified Automatic Shut Down System at OTC

PetroHab, the world’s premier provider of Hot Work Safety Enclosures (HWSE), is pleased to announce the official launch of its state-of-the-art ATEX certified Safe-Stop™ automatic shut down system. Designed and manufactured in Dundee, Scotland, the Safe-Stop Modular Shut Down System (MSDS) works in conjunction with the 100% US-made pressurised Petro-Habitat HWSE to provide unrivalled safety whenever hot work is conducted in the vicinity of potential flammables, such as in ATEX Zone 1 rated hazardous areas on oil rigs and at refineries.

By continuously monitoring the pressure inside the Petro-Habitat HWSE, the Safe-Stop MSDS enhances the Petro-Habitat’s safety by only allowing hot work to be conducted inside the HWSE if the air pressure within it exceeds the air pressure outside of it, thereby creating what is often referred to as a “positive pressure environment”. This serves to prevent unwanted flammable gases from entering the enclosure, which allows hot work to be safely undertaken in the Petro-Habitat, without the need to shut down the facility where the hot work is to take place.

Hermann Twickler, Managing Director of PetroHab Ltd in Dundee, said: “PetroHab’s Safe-Stop is a compact & lightweight, integrated, ATEX certified, automatic shut down system that surpasses other outdated systems on the market, which are almost universally heavy, bulky, and require an extensive amount of hardware, ducting, and cabling.

Mr Twickler continued: “The Safe-Stop MSDSsystem was designed with the end user’s gas detection and safety needs and requirements in mind. Among the many functions that the Safe-Stop system performs are the monitoring of pressure within the Petro-Habitat and the detection of various gases both inside and outside the HWSE. Optionally, external gas detectors are offered, which may be placed around the Petro-Habitat to enhance the safety within the general area surrounding the hot work.”

Samer Al-Azem, President of PetroHab, LLC in Houston, said: “PetroHab has always had the best habitats on the market. Our patented Quadra-Lock® panel attachment system is unparalleled, allowing virtually limitless modularity and configurability, which practically renders obsolete the failure prone zippered “A” and “B” type panels currently used throughout the HWSE industry.Manufactured from a premium ANSI/FM4950 certified, US-made silicone-coated fiberglass cloth, our panels can withstand continuous temperatures of up to 1,000°F (540°C).  Moreover, our panels are stitched with virtually fireproof Kevlar® thread to ensure their strength and high temperature resistance. These features make the Petro-Habitat the industry standard for safety and durability, and further provide for easier assembly and disassembly of the Petro-Habitats, and a faster, simpler, and more reliable means of exit in the event of an emergency.

Mr Al-Azem continued "I am confident that when our Petro-Habitat HWSE’s are used in conjunction with the Safe-Stop MSDS’s, our customers can rest assured that they are benefiting from the safest, most compact, and innovative hot work enclosure solution on the market today.”

The Safe-Stop system consists of three main components; the Modular Control Unit (MCU), the Pressure Control Unit (PCU), and the Shut Down Unit (SDU). The MCU is incorporated into one of the wall panels of the Petro-Habitat, thereby providing an organised layout on the interior of the enclosure with virtually no footprint. The operating airflow inlet, fire damper, and oxygen sensor are housed in the compact MCU, maximising working space within the habitat. A pressure differential sensor, and siren & beacon warning system, are also part of the MCU, while the PCU contains the main control unit, H2S & methane gas detection, a fan to pressurise the habitat, as well as an additional siren and beacon.

Upon detecting either a loss of pressure, or high or low oxygen levels inside the enclosure, the ATEX Zone 1 Safe-Stop MSDS will automatically shut down the hot work operations, while keeping the intake blower running in order to pressurise the Petro-Habitat. Should any hazardous gases be detected in the feed to the PCU, the Safe-Stop MSDS will shut down both the hot work operations and the flow of air.

Petro-Hab’s economical ATEX certified Safe-Work™ Modular Control System (MCS) provides a safe work environment within Zone 2 rated hazardous locations. This system is integrated into the Petro-Habitat in the same way as the ATEX Zone 1 rated system, but eliminates the extra services, and costs required for Zone 1 rated areas. PetroHab further offers custom integrated DNV 2.7-1 transport containers that are designed to neatly and securely fit all the components of PetroHab’s Petro-Habitat HWSE, Safe-Stop MSDS, and Safe-Work MCS.
