Today, (24 February 2022) OPITO, the global safety and skills organisation, hosted more than 100 students at the world’s largest subsea exhibition and conference as part of the first My Energy Future LIVE event, designed to showcase the opportunities a career in energy can offer.

  • 5 schools participated in My Energy Future LIVE’s inaugural event at Subsea Expo, Aberdeen
  • The STEM programme is part of My Energy Future, OPITO’s interactive STEM platform which launched in 2021
  • STEM challenges were led by OPITO, Global Underwater Hub, TechFest and The Royal Navy

The event, which took place during Subsea Expo, delivered by Global Underwater Hub, at the P&J Live exhibition and conference centre, was attended by students from 5 schools across the North East of Scotland.

Formerly known as Energise Your Future, My Energy Future LIVE brings together the next generation of talent and industry experts, giving pupils the chance to explore the exciting career opportunities available across the oil and gas, hydrogen, carbon capture usage and storage and offshore wind.

The inspirational event saw young people work in teams to complete various exciting STEM challenges such as building the most efficient wind turbine. Tasks were delivered by Scottish STEM education charity TechFest, STEM Ambassadors in Scotland and The Royal Navy, in partnership with OPITO and Global Underwater Hub.

Students were also given the opportunity to tour the exhibition to learn about the businesses driving the energy transition such as Motive Offshore and Prevco Subsea, try out the technologies on show including augmented reality and diving equipment, and discover emerging roles and routes into the sector.

Andy Williamson, Head of Energy Transition at OPITO, commented: “Initiatives like My Energy Future LIVE are an investment in our future. As identified in the OPITO UKCS Workforce Dynamics Review, the energy sector needs to recruit 25,000 people by 2025, with around 4,500 in roles that don’t currently exist.

“At OPITO, we are playing our part by continuing to create new products and standards to develop a skilled and competent workforce that can work across the integrated energy mix. My Energy Future LIVE events give pupils the chance to take part in hands-on STEM challenges and hear real-life experiences from industry personnel at a critical time when they are considering their future career path. It is essential we ignite passion in our young people and encourage them to pursue a career in energy to achieve our shared net zero ambitions.

“After such a positive start to our first MEF LIVE event, we are looking forward to rolling this out across the UK in the coming months.”

Trish Banks, operations director at Global Underwater Hub has been involved with the GUH STEM Challenge as well as other OPITO-led STEM initiatives for more than a decade. She said: “This year’s My Energy Future Live event has been incredibly positive and the school pupils taking part all showed a real enthusiasm for the underwater energy industry. It has been really encouraging to see so many young people considering a future career path in our sector as we continue on our journey towards Net Zero.”

The re-brand of My Energy Future LIVE (formerly Energise My Future) comes following last year’s launch of My Energy Future, OPITO’s interactive STEM platform, designed to engage young people and spark their interest in a career in the energy. The previous Energise My Future events of the same format have been held as part of major energy industry events and delivered through standalone sessions since 2008.

Ahead of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Glasgow, OPITO, the global safety and skills body for the energy industry, has reconfirmed its intention to identify commonalities between existing energy skills training and assessments to support global standards for hydrogen, carbon capture usage and storage (CCUS) and floating offshore wind.

With a 50-year legacy in oil and gas and a global footprint, OPITO’s well established emergency response frameworks, for on and offshore, will act as a basis for the development of hydrogen-specific, CCUS and floating offshore wind workforce training.

Andy Williamson, Head of New Ventures, OPITOAndy Williamson, Head of New Ventures, OPITOAndy Williamson, Head of Energy Transition at OPITO, said: “Government’s plans to create a thriving green economy in the UK over the next ten years will create thousands of jobs, billions of investment and export opportunities for the supply chain.

“This is already underway with major oil and gas operators announcing plans to create offshore wind and hydrogen hubs, based in the UK. OPITO’s leading role in energy skills, development and competency means we recognise the importance of our highly skilled oil and gas workforce and the role they can play in a low carbon economy, both domestically and further afield.”

Mr Williamson continued: “Collaboration is key. Our workgroups reviewing the standards currently in use throughout the oil and gas industry to understand transferability between sectors continue to gather momentum. The aim is to minimise duplication and standardise training for the workforce, thereby reducing cost and helping the supply chain to remain competitive.

“We are already working with major project developers globally, focused on technologies including offshore wind, hydrogen and CCUS, to ensure that our existing standards are embedded into these projects and the workforce can operate to the highest standard possible in a safe and skilled manner.

“Together with our partners and stakeholders, this approach will be upheld throughout the energy transition to ensure safety is never compromised and we secure high value renewable jobs in the UK.”

OPITO’s commitment to supporting the energy transition is underlined by its role leading the development of a People and Skills Plan as part of the North Sea Transition Deal, launched in March 2021.

One of the UK’s largest oil producer’s employee development and competency system has been recognised as amongst the best in the world after it secured coveted approval from industry skills organisation OPITO.

Designed to ensure high quality performance and safe working practice, the Competence Management System (CMS) approval guarantees personnel working on all three of Nexen Petroleum UK Limited’s North Sea assets - Buzzard, Scott and Golden Eagle - are performing their roles to global best practice criteria.

2016 03 24 122544Nexen fully embraced the opportunity to implement the OPITO scheme by deploying around a third of its UK-based workforce to deliver the challenge – this reduced the overall timeframe to achieve OPITO’s high standards of excellence. The workscope involved developing and enhancing Nexen’s own in-house process and led to more robust roles and responsibilities being identified and created within the organisation.

To gain approval, OPITO carried out a series of audits covering 15 different safety critical roles across the business, including offshore installation managers, superintendents, supervisors, lead technicians and technicians.

Achieving full approval demonstrates Nexen’s commitment to mitigating risk and ensuring the continual development of its workforce.

John McDonald, managing director of OPITO UK, said: “Having a system for managing workforce competence independently approved to industry best practice not only ensures there is measured development of employees' skills sets, it helps to set and maintain a framework for continuous improvement and performance management, driving efficiencies and delivering cost benefits across a business.

“The assurance of a skilled and competent workforce is a vital tool in helping companies succeed in the current climate, but more importantly, it ensures that we continue to build a sustainable industry for the future. It is extremely encouraging to see an operator like Nexen raising the bar for the rest of the industry by investing in its North Sea workforce in this way.”

Ray Riddoch, UK Managing Director UK and SVP Europe said: “This was a tremendous team effort involving several departments across Nexen collaborating together and involved around 135 personnel who carried out this challenging task with diligence and integrity over an extended period ensuring that a Best In Class system was delivered and one can be sustained long term.”

Nexen has plans to develop the OPITO approved CMS further and extend it throughout its global operations in the near future.
