TotalEnergies and Air Liquide have signed an agreement for the long-term supply of green and low carbon hydrogen to the TotalEnergies refining and petrochemical platform in Normandy. The project will contribute to the decarbonization of the Gonfrevillle site, reducing its CO2 emissions by up to 150,000 tons a year. This cooperation between Air Liquide and TotalEnergies is aligned with the two companies’ shared commitment to contributing to decarbonize industrial operations in the Axe Seine corridor.

2023 09 18 112114The project calls for the supply of 10,000 tons of green hydrogen per year to the TotalEnergies platform in Normandy and up to 5,000 tons per year of low carbon hydrogen starting from the second half of 2026. It is comprised of two integrated parts:

  • The production of green and low carbon hydrogen by the Normand’hy electrolyzer, which will be built and operated by Air Liquide, with a total electrical capacity of 200 MW. TotalEnergies will have access to half of this production capacity, corresponding to the amount of hydrogen supplied to its refinery.
  • TotalEnergies will supply around 700 GWh/year of renewable and low carbon power to the Air Liquide electrolyzer for half of its capacity, i.e. 100 MW, corresponding to the share of hydrogen delivered to the TotalEnergies refinery in Normandy.

"This partnership with Air Liquide is a new step in TotalEnergies' ambition to decarbonize the hydrogen used by its refineries in Europe by 2030. By supplying the electrolyzer with renewable electricity from solar and wind projects, TotalEnergies is making the most of its positioning as an integrated power supplier," said Bernard Pinatel, President Refining & Chemicals.

“This Memorandum of Understanding with TotalEnergies illustrates our ability to offer concrete decarbonization solutions to our customers. Air Liquide Normand’Hy will contribute to the decarbonization trajectory of our assets; it is also in line with our commitment to accompany the industry and mobility sectors in their path to reducing their carbon footprint. Our collaboration with TotalEnergies also strengthens hydrogen development in Normandy. Supported by the French State and the European Union, the Air Liquide Normand’Hy project confirms our commitment to develop renewable and low-carbon hydrogen production by electrolysis technology at industrial scale.” said Pascal Vinet, Executive Vice President and a member of Air Liquide’s Executive Committee, supervising notably Europe Industries activities.

Air Liquide has signed its largest long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) to date in the Netherlands with Vattenfall, for 115 MW or around 500 GWh per year, of renewable electricity from the offshore wind farm Hollandse Kust Zuid. This PPA comes in addition to a 100 GWh-PPA with Air Liquide announced in March 2021, expanding the long-term partnership.

The 15-year PPA starting in 2025 enables Air Liquide to supply its existing industrial and medical gas production assets in the Netherlands and more generally in the Benelux region with renewable energy.

Erik Suichies, Executive at Vattenfall’s Business Area Markets: “This Power Purchase Agreement is an important step for the Hollandse Kust Zuid project. Long-term commitments such as PPAs will make a significant contribution to the decarbonization goals of our industrial partners and help to bring closer Vattenfall’s ambition to create a fossil-free living within one generation at the same time.”

Hollandse Kust Zuid is the first and largest offshore wind project in the world to be developed without subsidy. Long-term contracts, such as the PPAs concluded with Air Liquide, provide financial security for the project’s investors and provide access to renewable energy for the purchasing party.

Hollandse Kust Zuid is located in the North Sea, about 18-35 kilometres off the Dutch coast between The Hague and Zandvoort. The offshore wind project, consisting of 140 wind turbines with a total capacity of 1,500 megawatts, is scheduled to be fully operational in 2023. Hollandse Kust Zuid is owned by Vattenfall, BASF and Allianz.

Vattenfall is a leading European energy company, which for more than 100 years has electrified industries, supplied energy to people’s homes and modernised our way of living through innovation and cooperation. We now want to make fossil-free living possible within one generation. That's why we are driving the transition to a sustainable energy system through initiatives in renewable production and climate-smart energy solutions for our customers. We employ approximately 19,000 people and have operations mainly in Sweden, Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, and the UK. Vattenfall is owned by the Swedish state. TotalEnergies, through Lampiris, its energy supply affiliate in Belgium, signed a Corporate Power Purchase Agreement with Air Liquide. TotalEnergies will supply 50 GWh per year of renewable electricity over a period of 15 years. Air Liquide will use this renewable energy to power some of its industrial and medical gas production sites in Belgium.

TotalEnergies will supply Air Liquide with this electricity from an offshore wind farm located in the Belgian North Sea. With a strong expertise across the integrated electricity chain, TotalEnergies proves its ability to provide competitive and available renewable electricity to support Air Liquide in its sustainable development objectives.

2021 07 28 124820This agreement also illustrates TotalEnergies’ commitment to contribute to Belgium’s energy transition, while promoting low carbon solutions for its customers. The wind-generated electricity will save about 270,000 tons of CO2 emissions over the life of the contract.

“A growing number of companies are shifting to renewable energy, and we want to support them on their path towards carbon neutrality. There is a dynamic market for corporate PPAs in Europe, and we want TotalEnergies to take a strong leadership position”, said Julien Pouget, Senior Vice President Renewables at TotalEnergies.

This contract with Air Liquide follows other Corporate PPAs signed earlier this year by TotalEnergies with Orange, Microsoft and Merck.

TotalEnergies, renewables and electricity

As part of its ambition to get to net zero by 2050, TotalEnergies is building a portfolio of activities in renewables and electricity that should account for up to 40% of its sales by 2050. At the end of 2020, TotalEnergies’ gross power generation capacity worldwide was around 12 GW, including 7 GW of renewable energy. TotalEnergies will continue to expand this business to reach 35 GW of gross production capacity from renewable sources by 2025, and then 100 GW by 2030 with the objective of being among the world's top 5 in renewable energies.
