World premieres met a large audience in the forest

The world’s largest forestry fair was bigger than ever this year both in terms of area and number of exhibitors. Many visitors were drawn to Elmia Wood to see new forestry products and services and to learn about new high-tech solutions and expertise in the forest south of Jönköping, Sweden.

“This has been a terrific fair,” said Edna Keane, CEO of Treemetrics, Ireland. “We’ve made contact with high-tech companies we didn’t know existed and met potential partners and customers from around the world.”

A total of 555 exhibitors from 28 countries were on the spot at Bratteborg to present their new products during four intensive days to visitors from six of the world’s continents. Many exhibitors participated in the fair’s new section, Load & Transport, with its theme of logistics and timber handling, which attracted many visitors.

Another visitor magnet was the fair’s new Drone Zone section, where conferences and live testing demonstrated the usability of drones in forestry applications.

“There’s been a lot of people and a lot of business done in the Drone Zone,” said Urban Wahlberg, CEO of Wabema and coordinator of the exhibitors there. “I estimate that two-thirds of our visitors came from outside Sweden.”

Unique premieres

Many of the world-leading suppliers gave unique premieres of their new forest machines.

“The number of international visitors has been greater than usual,” commented Tobias Johansson, the new CEO of Rottne, whose premieres included its new harvester, the Rottne H8D. “Our distributors in our export markets have met their customers here. We’ve also received enquiries from countries where we are not represented.”

“We’ve had many visitors,” said Carl-Johan Thell, sales rep for Liebherr in Sweden. “Our main target group is industrial customers, and they’re here. We operate in an international market, and at our stand international visitors clearly dominated. In that way Elmia Wood is a good match for what we want to achieve at a trade fair.”

“We’ve had an excellent stream of visitors to our stand,” said Daniel Persson Nyström of ExTe Fabriks AB. “Our main market is hauliers. A predominant proportion of visitors to our stand came from abroad and there’s been a lot of interest in our products.”

“Better than Google”

Visitors to the fair were also very satisfied with its large offering of new products and services.

“A fantastic fair,” commented Jan van der Sijde from South Africa. “I’ve been here for two days and it’s better than Google. Elmia Wood gives an overview of what’s available for the international forest industry.”

“Impressive to have a forestry fair in the middle of the forest,” said Naganori Kiyaoji from Japan. “We don’t have anything like this in Japan. There’s a lot to learn here and a lot to take home.”

The weather created some challenges for visitors, exhibitors and organisers alike.

“We’re pleased that an incredible number of people came to our stand. The rain just scared away people who aren’t in the industry. Our new products met with great interest,” said Dieter Reinisch, head of information at John Deere Forestry.

“We’re pleased that our new expanded fair was received so well,” concluded Jakob Hirsmark, exhibition manager of Elmia Wood. “The exhibitors’ demonstrations, the fair’s seminar programme, and the shows and competitions attracted large crowds. The fact that our exhibitors presented so many exciting world premieres bodes well for the future development of forestry. This industry is not standing still."

Forest Fuels appoints renewables specialist, Kevin Smith as sales and marketing director

UNTHA XR waste shredder hits one million operational hours

Austrian-headquartered shredding specialist UNTHA has just dispatched its 150th waste shredder.

The XR mobil-e is heading to France where, when commissioned, it will process 25 tonnes per hour of C&I waste down to 80mm particle size. But this machine had a particularly special ‘send-off’ when it left UNTHA’s manufacturing plant in Salzburg.

From its inception, the XR series has gone on to be installed in waste facilities worldwide. But continued innovation means the equipment has remained at the forefront of the industrial shredding market.

So much so, the XR technology has now racked up more than one million operational hours in waste to energy, cement installations and complex recycling plants.

Commenting on this milestone achievement, Peter Streinik, head of UNTHA’s waste division said: “When the engineering of this shredder first began we knew we had created something special. It began to revolutionise how operators processed bulky and challenging wastes, and supported the industry’s commitment to recycle and recover valuable resources.

“But it is the continued R&D investment we make into this machine which has seen the XR maintain its position at the forefront of the industry. Only a few weeks ago, for example, we introduced new motor and cutter configurations which mean clients can now tackle a greater variety of input materials and produce a wider array of output specifications – all with the same energy efficiency, cost-saving and reliability benefits.

“And, with almost 150 XRs now in operation, UNTHA is helping to maximise the value of over 10 million tons of waste every year.”

The XR’s achievements have been widely cited in the media ranging from the processing of footwear production waste in Vietnam, the processing of waste wood for biomass and even pulper ropes from the paper industry in a single pass, as well as C&I & MSW type waste for SRF and RDF gasification and other WtE projects worldwide.

Commenting on this machine, client James Wheeldon said: “The XR was the only shredder capable of producing the <30mm particle required for SRF for the cement industry, in a single pass, without the need for a pre-shredder. The slow speed design and robust build meant that the fuel could be produced with high availability while significantly reducing the operational costs and increasing the profitability of our plant.”


Riverside celebrates 20-year milestone

The past twenty years have been quite a whirlwind for the waste and recycling industry, with recessions, regulations, landfill tax hikes and technological innovations just some of the notable talking points.

But the last two decades have also seen the growth of baler specialist Riverside Waste Machinery.

The company – originally founded by Chris Oldfield in 1997 – is now run by his son Jonathan Oldfield. And the managing director has some upcoming plans equally as exciting as the team’s previous achievements.

“We’ve installed more than 2,000 balers throughout the UK,” Jonathan commented. “But we’re not going to stop there. We’ve worked with clients from Hastings through to the Outer Hebrides, and our forward order book is strong.

“Our balers have proven they’re built to last too, which means that whilst we sometimes replace clients’ machines with newer models that offer greater capacity, we’re usually able to refurbish and re-sell the older kit. In fact, our engineers are so talented, the balers often look – and run – like new!”

Yet despite their growth, it’s fair to say the 20 year journey has not always been straightforward for the Riverside team.

“We’ve seen price-driven markets erode margins, we’ve struggled in the face of skills shortages and we’ve watched, at times, as the recycling industry has battled to have its voice heard at Government level,” Jonathan reflected.

“Sometimes this has meant turbulent times for organisations like ours. But we’ve concentrated on maintaining our accreditations, delivering services as well as machinery, and price matching baler consumables so clients know they don’t ever need to look elsewhere.

“Twenty years is certainly an achievement to be proud of, but now it’s a case of what’s next!”

To mark the landmark achievement, Riverside has produced an infographic of their journey since 1997, which features notable moments in time including the evolution of packaging waste regulations, key staffing changes and the memorable award win from TV ‘Dragon’ Theo Paphitis.

Riverside has more than 20 waste baler models within its range, 10 types of baler consumables, a suite of service and maintenance options, a used baler marketplace and a certified operator training scheme.
