Tata Chemicals Europe
is considering plans to construct a £22m, 15km brine pipeline and pumping station that will link the Warmington brine field to its Middlewich salt factory. Millipore Ireland is progressing a project having received planning approval from Cork County Council (ref: 126574) to install a complete new process line at its Carrigtwohill facility, Protel reported 13 Feb. The project to expand membrane filter production is due for completion in Q4/14. The project lead is given as Jim Shiels, project engineering manager, Tullagreen, Carrigtwohill, Co Cork, Ireland. Pasta Foods is to expand production into an additional new factory in Norwich for pasta recipe dishes following £0.5m grant assistance, reports Protel. As well as transferring existing production lines, there will be a requirement for a new additional line. Orders for major plant items have been placed but opportunities may exist for smaller equipment items. Schedule – Site start Q1/14; fit-out Q2/14; completion Q3/14. A major waste-to-energy demonstration project could be built at the former Huntsman Tioxide plant in Grimsby - depending on the soon-to-be-decided outcome of a competition run by the Energy Technologies Institute. 
Dutch company Royal Dahlman is working with Grimley Smith Associates on the project to produce electricity using a gasification process, from domestic or commercial waste.

Tenders have now been returned for the £171m wastewater treatment works upgrade at Davyhulme in Manchester, reports Glenigan. The works for United Utilities will include primary settlement tanks, activated sludge plant, final settlement tanks, mechanical thickening of surplus activated sludge and odour control. A contractor is to be announced in April and work on the 36-month contract could commence in summer.

Antaco is proceeding with plans to start up its first pilot plant for a process to convert organic waste into a high-calorific-value 'biocoal'. Its hydrothermal carbonisation project has attracted an £858k grant from a DECC fund to support for UK clean-tech start-ups.

Accrol Papers is planning to invest £12m to expand its tissue production plant in Blackburn, Protel reports. The works will involve extending existing warehouse and production buildings. In Wales, Tata Steel is seeking planning permission to upgrade the power generation facilities serving its Port Talbot steel works. The plan is to enhance the existing 95.7MW electrical (MWe) power station and install two new boilers, and two turbines to increase capacity to between 170MWe and 225MWe. Regeneron has sanctioned the development of a production and fill/finish facility at Limerick, Ireland, Protel reports. Works will include fitting-out an existing building and installation of process. International

The Arctic countries together rank as the top seven most attractive mining destinations in the world, according to UKTI - citing the findings of Fraser Institute global mining survey,  Led by  Finland, Sweden, Canada, Norway and Greenland, the region offers major opportunities to UK businesses across different products and services. These, say UKTI, include exploration and mining, construction and infrastructure, financial and professional services, and equipment and machinery. PIM report

An Italian university with international expertise in innovation and technology transfer, in cooperation with a local public financial company, wants to enter into contact with UK consortia and/or consortia to submit a joint proposal in the call capacity-building in technologytransfer within the Horizon 2020 EU programme. One of the largest energy providers in Poland is looking for a company to modernise operating systems in one of its heat and power station. The selection criteria is: Price 45%; Guarantee 10%; System maintenance costs 10%; Points sum (functionality assessment) 25%; rbg price ranges 5%. The response deadline is 11 March 2014. Two new boiler feed water pumps with variable speed drives and electric motors are required to stabilise the pressure fluctuation in the common supply header, and equalise BFW distribution to individual boilers of a power plant in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. The coal-fired steam unit is of Russian origin and started operations in 1983. It comprises eight boilers, each having a capacity of 420 t/h at 560C and 140 bar, six 80-100MW extraction condensing turbines. Response deadline 12 March 2014. UKTI details - external site.

One of the largest Brazilian contractors is developing the largest sanitation project in Brazil, in the north east of the country, and is seeking to identify UK companies who can provide technologies in sewage treatment systems. The project aims to provide sewage treatment services for 3.7m habitants in 14 municipalities and guarantee treatment for all sewage collected. Response deadline 10 March 2014. One of the largest oil companies in Poland is looking for specialised pit-drilling equipment, including pumps, cables and modules, along with appropriate certificates. The tender is split into two parts: Supply of six complete sets of pit-drilling equipment: Supply of six complete sets of pit pumps, along with ESP. The deadline for responses in 9 Feb. Mexico's state-owned power utility CFE has issued a major international tender on the power sector, UKTI has signalled. The winning company will be in charge of developing a combined cycle power plant and to deliver design, engineering, material and equipment supply, construction, installation, trials and technical support. (Read more)

Oil & Gas - International  

UK contractors are being sought to work with South Korean firms on a project to build a 530km export pipeline for a gas field in Iraq. A major Korean contractor has won a $499m contract to design and provide engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning of the pipeline for the field in the Western Anbar province near the border with Syria. Power & Water - UK & Ireland

Detailed plans have now been approved for the anaerobic digestion plant proposed for Bowley Court Farm, Hope under Dinmore in Leominster for C M Mercier. Works are expected to commence on the £2m scheme during Spring 2014 and be carried out over a period of four to five months. (Source: Glenigan)

Horizon Nuclear Power on 4 Dec, announced strategic contracts with AMEC, Atkins and Cavendish Nuclear for the provision of engineering and related technical services for its planned multi-billion-pound development of nuclear power stations at Wylfa on Anglesey and Oldbury in South Gloucestershire. Having confirmed its three lead suppliers, Horizon said it will procure other works, services and goods that are outside of this framework, such as physical works and assurance services. The UK Coal Authority has recently issued details of a £5-25m, four-year framework for the design and build of mine water, mine gas and other environmental assets/facilities. Core activities comprise of scoping, feasibility, outline, detail design and construction work for new build and refurbishment for older scheme projects, ranging in value from £20k - £2m. A major South Korea power generation company is currently developing a project to build a 340MW power plant worth of $350m in Korea. Construction work has been started from 2012 and will be completed by 2015. The budget for the project is comprises three parts: $137m for boilers, $57m for turbines and US$7127m (sic) for BOP (Balance of Plant - 30 PCS). UK supply chain companies are required for building of two power plants (870MW each) in Korea. The construction work will be start from 2014 and will be completed by 2018.  The budget for the project is composed of three parts: $477m for boilers, $241m for turbines and $730m for balance of plant. The contracting company operates power generation facilities with a total capacity of 8,375MW, equivalent to 10% of the nation’s capacity. The response deadline is 28 Feb 2014. Chemicals, Food, Pharma - UK & Ireland

Warburtons is to build a new £20m site which will create 60 jobs in Burnley. The plan is to build a plant next to its existing bakery in Billington Road to make products such wraps and Sandwich Thins. A planning application has been submitted to Burnley Council, with work set to begin in February if approved.

Penn Pharmaceutical Services is planning to develop a new small potent containment laboratory. A tender round is thought to be underway with Engineering Houses. The project is valued at £0.3mi. For a pharma packaging facility expansion, Teva UK is considering a project to develop new changing areas with isolation interlocks at its Eastbourne, UK site. A concept study has been completed and a tender round is underway for a design and build contract. The project is valued at £0.5m, with tendering taking place now and procurement to start in Q1/14. GSK have been granted planning approval for project 'Evreux', a new £25m facility at Montrose dedicated to the production of aluminium adjuvants, Protel has reported. Detailed design is being carried out by Morgan Sindall's Warrington office. Procurement is under way with fit-out due to start Q2 2014. Pfizer has sanctioned the transfer of products from some of their other sites to Puurs. Works will include an expansion to existing production lines with associated internal modifications. Schering-Plough has sanctioned efficiency improvements at its Heist-Op-Den-Berg site in The Netherlands. The scheme, said Protel, will include utilities and HVAC modifications and possibly the construction of an extension to the existing facility. Plans for a new €75m API production facility at Weesp have been placed on hold, Protel reports. Jacobs Engineering completed the original concept study in 2012 and subsequently revised it to include further options. A decision on the future of the project is expected in early 2014.

A recycling company from western Poland has announced a tender for the construction of a glassworks together with all the necessary utilities connection, light and a road to access the glassworks. The facility will be producing package glass. The bid value is around GBP25 million. Supplier responses are being routed through UK Trade & Investment's commercial offices.
